In the busy streets of Indian cities, a new electric vehicle is making waves. The Ather Rizta isn’t just another electric scooter – it’s a thoughtfully designed family vehicle that could change how millions of households move around every day.
Bangalore-based Ather Energy first became known for its sporty 450 series electric scooters that appealed to tech-lovers and performance enthusiasts. Now, with the Rizta, they’ve created something completely different – a practical family scooter that doesn’t sacrifice quality or innovation.
“We wanted to create a vehicle that serves the everyday needs of Indian families without compromising on reliability or features,” explains Tarun Mehta, one of Ather’s founders.
The Rizta stands out with its roomier design that comfortably fits two adults and a child. The extended seat sits at a height of 770mm – perfect for riders of different heights while still providing enough ground clearance for rough roads.
Storage space is impressive, with a 34-liter under-seat compartment that easily fits groceries or two helmets. There’s also a convenient front storage pocket for phones, wallets, and keys – small details that make a big difference in daily use.
While the Rizta isn’t built for racing, its performance hits the sweet spot for city travel. It can reach 40 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 80 km/h – plenty fast for urban commuting and occasional highway use.
Battery life is where the Rizta truly shines. With a real-world range of 95-110 kilometers on a single charge, most families can go several days between charges. When it’s time to power up, owners can use Ather’s growing network of 1,900+ fast-charging stations or simply plug in at home overnight.
The 7-inch touchscreen dashboard offers helpful features without overwhelming riders. Navigation, battery monitoring, and ride tracking are easy to use, and the smartphone app lets family members share location information for peace of mind.
Safety features include fall detection that can alert emergency contacts and a camera system that provides security when parked. The scooter even receives regular software updates to improve functionality over time.
Starting at ₹1,24,999 (with government subsidies), the Rizta offers excellent value beyond the purchase price. Families can save around ₹2,000 monthly on fuel compared to petrol scooters, while maintenance costs about 40% less due to fewer moving parts.
“The monthly savings alone make a compelling case for going electric,” says Ravi Kumar, a new Rizta owner. “But it’s the smooth, quiet ride and knowing we’re reducing pollution that really makes us happy with our choice.”
The Ather Rizta represents an important shift in India’s electric vehicle market – the moment when EVs become practical enough for everyday family use. By focusing on what families actually need rather than flashy specifications, Ather has created a vehicle that could help bring electric transportation into the mainstream.
